The Return of Shimmer Paint

Many years ago I bought my first little container of shimmer paint.  I say “many years” because I have had it in my craft collection for so long that I have no idea when I bought it! When I first used the Frost White Shimmer Paint I tried it in a spritz bottle mixed with rubbing alcohol and sprayed my paper to create a shimmery background.  Let me tell you, that was not easy and I had shimmer everywhere but on the paper!!

I eventually tucked it away and forgot about it until last winter.  I played around with it and discovered a really easy way to use it to add detail to cards:  simply dip the tip of a stylus into the paint and drop a dot on your project.

This quickly became my favourite technique for adding inexpensive embellishments, but  I was starting to run low on this old jar of shimmer paint.

Well, I was in luck because Stampin’ Up! just released 4 colours of Shimmer Paint in the 2018 Holiday Catalogue: Bright Copper, Champagne Mist, Frost White, and… Vegas Gold!

I am loving that gold shimmer paint!

A new trick I just learned with the Frost White is that you can add a bit of ink to it to make different colours (as seen with the red tree accents above).

For a slightly different variation of this technique, add a very small amount of water to the shimmer paint and splatter it with an Aqua Painter.

After trying the splatter technique and having the brush in my hand, I wondered if it could be tinted with ink and painted on an image.  Yes, it can!

I love this shimmery, pale blue unicorn!

  1. I love your idea of tinting the shimmer paint with ink! And I’ve already tried your technique of dotting the shimmer ink using a stylus…added just that little extra something to my card 👌🏻
